In the beginning, the Endless created the Heavens and the Earth. After this, He created the 7 Harmonies to maintain order. However, one of these defected seeking to establish his own order. This defector became known as Kaos.

Johnny Shepherd is Janet Alan's ex-boyfriend. When they first met, he immediately saw utility in her ability as a partial polymage in order to manage EFRs who'd thwart his attempts at theft. He romanced her and used her to compensate for his inability to perform magic.

After their last job resurrecting Richard Lamont, Johnny was taken prisoner on an unmarked continent. Kaos approaches him, getting in his head and festering his rage, and blessing him with power to kill the current White Mage, Janet Alan.

Johnny never really loved Jane but he did slowly grow fond of her endearing personality. With Jane having an affinity for magic and him being powerless, Johnny has an inferiority complex. To add salt to the wound, Jane never let him have sex with her because she wanted to wait for marriage.

Drawing power from Kaos, he is what's known as a Black Mage. Kaos brands his cattle with his insignia, an Omega. Johnny calls himself "Apakolypse" because it sounds cool.
