Katyusha dancing at the campfire
The winter has come to claim dozens of lives again. Nothing new for the winter hardened russian. In the other hand, Katyusha and comrades are preferring the cozy warmth of the russian tea at the campfire. After sitting for a while some start singing russian folk songs. Katyusha remembers some of these songs, and starts singing alongside her comrades. And because Katyusha doesn't know that many russian folksongs, she trys to make her mouth movements look like singing alongside her friends, trying not to stand out. After the perhaps fifth song sung by the soldiers at the campfire, Katyusha is surprised of what she heard next. It was the song, she was named after. She remembers well, her mother singing the song to her every time so went to bed as a little child.
"Apple and pear trees blossomed,
Mists flew over the river.
Katyusha went out onto a river bank,
Onto a high and steep river bank."
It was my song, she thought..
She went from making just mimic mouth movements to actually singing.
Her voice raised after every line, until she actually stood out, but not in the way she first thought.
She actually managed to make everyone around the fire sing louder and louder, singing with her voice leading the song, and even all the inhabitants from the village coming next to the campfire, to find out that the comrades sing together around the campfire, with all their devotion dedicated to the song. But one voice stood out. That of Katyusha. She suddenly got up and moved close to the fire. Overwhelmed by the feeling of nostalgia towards the song, and driven by the inextinguishable flame of passion, she started to dance, while singing.
"She was walking, singing a song
About a grey steppe eagle,
About her true love,
Whose letters she was keeping."
Others stood up, and joined her in her dance. The voices became even louder, and the townspeople started singing along. But then it started. It was the refrain of the song Katyusha was named after. And everyone started singing now.
"Oh you song! Little song of a maiden,
Head for the bright sun.
And reach for the soldier on the far-away border
Along with greetings from Katyusha."
It was so intense and overwhelming, some started to a shed tear, not only because of joy, but because of sadness. This moment wont last forever, but at least this night belonged to them. It was late at night, but the town was alive like never before. No one dared to sleep. Even the children and the elderly stood awake this night, accompanying the soldiers of the red army. Then everyone from the village started to sing.
"Let him remember an ordinary girl,
And hear how she sings,
Let him preserve the Motherland,
Same as Katyusha preserves their love."
After singing and drinking together at night, some of the soldiers start do dance around the campfire, joining Katyusha in her dance. They made sure they enjoy the last moment peace together, before the next day came, because no one knew, if they would make the next day...
