MV Freshwater 42 Years

今日、2024 年 12 月 18 日水曜日は、特別なフェリーの記念日です。1982 年のこの日 (土曜日)、サーキュラー キー - マンリー航路の様相は一変しました。ニューカッスルに発注された (当時) 3 隻の新しいフェリーのうち最初の 1 隻、ステート ドックヤードの MV フレッシュウォーター (同クラスのネームシップ) が就航し、当時 61 歳近くになっていたビンガラ級フェリー MV (元 SS) バラグーラの代わりとして 1 か月後に引退するまで就航しました。1985 年まで、フレッシュウォーターは姉妹船のクイーンズクリフとナラビーン (III) とともに、バラグーラの姉妹船である 1913 年建造の MV ノース ヘッド (元 SS バレンジョイ) とともに就航し、同年引退しました。フレッシュウォーターはマンリー航路で最も古い特別建造の伝統的なフェリーという称号を獲得し、その称号は今日まで保持されています。
就航から42年が経った今、フレッシュウォーターはサーキュラーキーとマンリー間を運航する最古のフェリーであるだけでなく、2017年10月にレディクラス（IV）フェリーが引退した後のトランスデブ・シドニー・フェリーの船団の中で最も古い船でもあります。
この節目を記念して、シドニーでの 42 年間の任務を記念する特別なバナーを、ビンガラ級の姉妹艦であるノース ヘッド、バラグーラ、そしてフレッシュウォーターの若い頃の姿とともに掲載します。このバナーは、フレッシュウォーターの原点と現在の姿を比較して示しており、背景には 1982 年当時の姿を示す 2 枚の写真と、現在の姿を表すために 6 月に私が撮影した写真が 1 枚掲載されています。
港湾の新しい女王、フレッシュウォーター、任務 42 年間おめでとうございます。バラグーラが今も生きていれば、きっとあなたを誇りに思い、さらにふさわしい後継者として見なしていたことでしょう。

Today, Wednesday 18th December 2024, marks a special anniversary for a very special ferry. On this day in 1982 (which was a Saturday), the face of the Circular Quay-Manly run was changed forever when the first of (by then) three new ferries ordered from Newcastle, MV Freshwater of State Dockyard and name ship of her class entered service to serve as a replace for the by then nearly 61-year-old Binngarra-class ferry MV (ex-SS) Baragoola until her retirement a month later. Until 1985, Freshwater along with her sisters Queenscliff and Narrabeen (III) served alongside Baragoola's sister ship of the 1913-built MV North Head (ex-SS Barrenjoey) until her retirement that same year, leaving Freshwater with the title of the oldest specially-built traditional ferry on the Manly run, a title she actually still holds to this very day!
Now, 42 years to the day she entered service, Freshwater is not only the oldest ferry operating between Circular Quay and Manly but is also the old vessel in the Transdev Sydney Ferries fleet after the retirement of the Lady-class (IV) ferries in October 2017.
To mark this milestone, here is a special banner commemorating her 42 years of service in Sydney with the modern version but Binngarra-class sisters North Head, Baragoola, and a younger version of Freshwater herself. It shows where she came from compared to how she is now, complete with two photographs in the background showing how she looked in 1982 and one of my own photos taken in June to represent her how she looks nowadays.
Happy 42 years of service, MV Freshwater, the new Queen of the Harbour! I bet if Baragoola was still around today, she'd be proud of you and see you more as her worthy successor.
