A very special gift for Santa
Just in time for Christmas Eve I managed to finish this drawing inspired by one of my favorite holiday stories, L. Frank Baum's 1902 book "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus".
An important scene in the book is near the end when as a result of the good deeds throughout his life, a council of immortals (some of whom are major characters in the book) vote to give Santa the Mantle of Immortality on what was supposed to be the final day of his life, which is a big deal for them since there is only one Mantle. Depicted here is one of the main characters in the book, the immortal Ak (based on how he appears in early illustrations of the book), arriving at Santa's home with the rest of the council of immortals (not pictured) and are briefly confronted by the Spirit of Death who leaves disappointed when she sees the Mantle.
I've seen many takes on Santa over the years, but this is the only story I've come across that explains, at least in versions where it's the same person, how he's lived for countless centuries.
