Gætíus' World: Pakran helmet
Gætíus' World is my low fantasy world which combines Old World iron age societies with American pre-Columbian cultures.
The pakrans are one of the main cultures that inhabit the Empire of Resak in southwestern Laxilþía, the northern continent of Gætíus' World, and are mostly by Ancient Greece and the Maya. Once a collection of city-states squabbling for power and resources in the Ajómax Rainforest, their land is now part of Pakróalx, the northwestern province of the empire.
While pakran culture emphasizes discipline and simplicity in many ways (their cuisine is infamously bland, for example), this austerity does not apply when it comes to weapons and arms; shields, armour, helmets and weapons are painted, engraved and embossed to show off their owners' wealth and success in combat. Crests made of quetzal feathers are especially popular, as depicted here.
The pattern on the edges (representing a gaping maw) and the centipede on top of the helmet are both symbols related to the underworld. Pakrans, unlike rexans, greatly fear death and believe the afterlife to be a cold, wet and overall dreadful place, regardless of ones' actions in life, and alluding to these things on their helmets and shields is meant to demoralize the enemy.
