VF-5, go!
Title page:
This came out somewhat different than I expected (but isn't that always the case when one envisions art, and then tries to get that image down on paper?). Nevertheless, in the time that I allotted for it, it came out quite decent, don't you agree?
The Battroid is a mix of the revised transformation and limb placement details with what I felt are the "unique charm points" on the original version. I'm not quite satisfied with how the head and neck turned out. If I find the time...
Page 1 & 2:
In addition to attempting to attempting to render the VF-5 design as well as I could, I tried to hammer out these pages as quickly and simply as possible. In some ways, these pages are an experiment in a new style and technique. Was it successful?
It was quite fun to draw the Zentradi Air Battle Pod.
Pg 3 & 4:
I had to struggle a bit to get the angles of the various components correct in panel 3 on page 3—it's easy to make a jumble of unintelligible mecha parts, but hard to make it clear, yet dynamic.
Drawing the Guraji (Glaug) and Rigado (Regult) Battle Pods was quite nostalgic. However, I found the Rigado to be deceptively simple and much harder than I remember them being when I drew them in my youth! I think it's the economy of line—if you don't get the lines just right, the design just doesn't work.
I continued experimenting on these two pages—gradient colours for explosion centers and mountain flanks, as well as a series of 10% white layers to suggest distance (2nd panel page 4).
At one point I was thinking about continuing the story. However, time is not our friend...
The Gluag came out much nicer than I expected.
