Retrieving St. Theophilus' Soul
Time and Date:
Date: January 24-25, 2022
Time: 35 hours
About:
Layers: 34+
Inspiration: From a legend in the life of St. Theophilus of Adana, an old manuscript drawing of Mary punching Satan's face for the contract to take back his sold soul, and an attempted art style and character design of Hazbin Hotel
I knew of Hazbin Hotel when it first came out, it was a creative world building and characters of Vivziepop and her team to do. We only knew some of the cherub characters, and I pondered what the other inhabitants of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss' Heaven looked.
Decided to maybe try to experiment with Vivziepop's art style. Settled with the Virgin Mary to do a character design, I don't know how her role in Vivziepop's Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss' universe would be due to the clashing religions. That I did ponder for quite a bit.
Her attire is mostly inspired by her apparitions at:
- Lourdes; White rosary with gold chains, the majority whiteness of her dress, and the golden rose on each foot.
- Pontmain; Deep blue colored shoes, stars on her dress (situated only at the skirt), the blue at the edge of her dress (It isn't really a gradient according to the apparation, but I just wanted to add some interest on her skirt.), and her diadem with a red line across.
- Las Lajas; Inner lining of the veil (It actually is overall a blue color, decided to just retain a few color palette for her.)
- Cuapa- The celestial cord tied on her waist
- Guadalupe; Outer lining of the veil (I was planning to settle with a beige cream color in tribute to Our Lady of Cuapa. Decided to let the turquoise and gold be a sort of accent colors)
- La Salette; The golden apron
I didn't really have to do any shadings and lightening, so I felt at ease to not worry about any of it. Sure it would look nice, but I chose to maybe stick with how they may try to animate her. Noticed how the blue does contrast Lucifer's design and character, might I add.
At that moment, an old memory was retrieved. I thought of the old manuscript drawing of the Virgin Mary punching Satan's face as she holds what looks to be a paper of a sorts. Found out it was from the life of St. Theophilus of Adana and how he sold his soul to return to his old position, regretted and constantly prayed and fasted for forgiveness. There Mary appeared and verbally chastised him for doing so. She retrieved his contract with the Devil and when he awoke, it was placed atop his chest. He went to a bishop, confessed, and burnt it. He died shortly after 3 days.
No one knows how and what the Virgin did to take back his soul from the Devil, and the manuscript is a creative interpretation on what possibly went down away from earth.
So I took the saint's legend, an old manuscript drawing, and Hazbin Hotel's art style and formed this little amalgamation of a piece.
