Gætíus' World: The city of Arkis
Gætíus' World is my low fantasy world which combines Old World iron age societies with American pre-Columbian cultures.
The empire of Resak is currently the most powerful country in Laxilþía, the northern continent of Gætíus' World, covering the entire southern and southwestern parts and encompassing jungles, swamps and mangroves, subtropical wood- and shrubland. A home to many different cultures, the ruling rexans are mostly inspired by the Aztecs and imperial Romans.
The capital of the empire is Arkis, located on and near a hill by the Velx River delta in the vast Kalis Swamp. Only the imperial palace and major temples are built on dry land there, with other neighbourhoods resting atop artificial islands that have been improved and expanded upon through the centuries as rexan engineering has improved.
The first scene depicts a busy street and canals at one such island, where a city guard enjoys some bread and mead while off-duty.
The second scene shows a gladiator fight at the Great Colosseum, both to entertain the people and as a ritual. Those who die in the arena are believed to join the sun god in the afterlife and protect him from the forces of darkness during the night.
The third scene depicts an aristocratic couple eating lunch in the garden of a villa. Rexan commoners usually eat only in the morning and afternoon, while wealthy have meals three times a day. To the far left is a family shrine with some offerings placed there.
